I purchased my 2012-2013 181cm Coombacks last week and have skied Mt Bachelor five days, in conditions ranging from 15 F during a 26" inch powder dump to 55 F a week later with no new snow. I find them incredible, they ski everything well. They love packed or shin-deep powder, they blast though melted and half-frozen piles of tracked powder, they float through untracked snow that's been baking in 55 F temps all day. They have been at home on nearly all the runs at Bachelor by now, lower mountain, upper mountain, frontside, backside.

But the best thing for me is they are unbelievably forgiving. Start thinking about that Bend brewpub you haven't tried yet, and no problem, the Coombacks just finish your turn and wait for your next command. Lean back, they don't care, they are there for you. Get sloppy, get lazy, the Coombacks will take care of you! (Not that I recommend sloppiness :-)

I initially thought the tip rocker was BS, since it's hardly visible, but now I really think the tip rocker helps a lot, as it allows a small input to get that turn going in just about anything. And whatever technology gives it to you, there's lots of power under your feet when you need to carve hard, whether it's soft or hard snow.

I have not tried them BC yet. They certainly are heavier than my touring skis, so it may be a while until I take them out there.

I am 5'10 160 and ski the 181 2013 Coomback. With the all-terrain rocker great length for me. I ski mostly in the east (Ski Patrol most weekends) and have had this ski out on groomers and ice and has performed surprisingly well. It holds an edge and has good turn initiation with the rocker. I was pleased that I could really stand on the edge, given the lack of metal in the ski I thought it would ski soft. This is a very playful ski but I will say it does prefer speed however that can be expected for its size. I bought this ski to serve mainly as a second pair for powder days and eastcoast backcountry in VT, NH and ME. It may not be the lightest, but its versitility really shines through in mixed and changing conditions. Out here we can transition from ice, to windblown, to corn in a single bc day and the ski handels all very well. I couldnt be happier with the choice-great job with this ski K2. BTW I love the graphic, have had several complements and its always great to connect with a fellow skier through the memory of Doug Coombs. Cheers!

Most of my clients and quite a few friends have used this ski since it first came out. I got a huge tip and ordered a pair of 181's with dynafits then it snowed 145 inches in the next three weeks. I read other reviews about chatter and poor handling in crud. I would say take a lesson. You can make them chatter on firm snow if you're brain dead. Tip them and move to the next turn; otherwise look for soft snow and take a lesson.I toured on the Wapta last April, no problems, although my WayBacks are lighter the Coombacks slayed the Pow. July mank in the Winds,again a very nice ride. Maybe alittle pow at Lost Trails with TeleTalley; just like ole times at Bridger Bowl.

Coming from a telemark background, my previous set up was an Atomic TM EX with g3 targas. I put telemark tech system (tts) bindings on the Coombacks and ran Scarpa Terminators. I was bombing chutes of wettish powder through the trees, just floating effortlessly. In the opens, the skis wanted more like a horse begging for the cudgel. These skis performed best the faster and more aggressive you ski. Very nimble, stable, predictable, perfect flexing, nice! Thank you K2!

The other day I went skiing on Stubaier glacier, a perfect chance to try out my new skis (Coombacks - BMW edition).
It has proven to be a perfect ski on groomers, on crust, powder and slush. It behaved same on all terains I skied on. So in one word PERFECT. Thanks K2!!!

I have a Diamir Freeride Pro mounted, this makes the setup really heavy (but up to 1500 meters a day it is still OK to carry around).
In powder or let's say anything that is not frozen it is really a pleasure to ride. As long as it is frozen but smooth it is all right as well (like conditions on a spring day). No fun to ride it is only on frozen old lines. From me 5 stars because they do all I wanted from it.

PS: I was looking for stability and floatation (full equipped I have 115kg that means it has a lot of float).

They'll take you, where you want to go. Soft or hard, fast or slow, deep or firm. I work on them. All you have to do is look, where you want to go and they'll take you there. 4 wheel drive all the time. At least, I enjoyin' the ride.

These skis are okay. I am used to a lot of float on my skis, my other skis are Voile Chargers. Prior to that I had an alpine setup with Prior Doughboys. I avoid he resort as much as possible.

I've only been out one day on these in thigh deep powder, so to be fair I'm still getting used to them. I have not experienced tip dive in years so I was caught quite off guard when it happened. And then surprised again. I have 181s and maybe 187s would have been better.

The climb is much nicer than on my Chargers. The snowphobic top sheet is marketing garbage though.

Just had my first week on 181 Coombacks in Flaine with F12 bindings, very impressed!

First day on piste, better than I expected for such a wide ski. Not brilliant, but they can certainly do it. Off piste they got better and better the deeper the snow was, and were fantastic in powder, really floating well! We did a half-day tour (1hr 45 min climb) and the precut skins and F12 bindings worked really well but Coombacks are a bit too heavy for longer day or multi-day tours, although of course better on the downhill than lighter, narrower skis.

Cons - a bit long for moguls and for trees, but that may be more down to the skier than the skis! As stated, bascially for an hour or 2 tour from the lifts to find powder but not really multi-day/ski mountaineering.

Me: 6'1", 94kgs, approximately 12 weeks total ski experience including 3 weeks off-piste.

These might be the ultimate western big mountain ski and are certainly worthy of their namesake. I ski mainly in the Tahoe area where conditions range from light and deep to wind-buff to frozen coral reefs and these babies never waver inspiring confidence in all conditions and terrain.
