Start with a solid, stable snowpack and add solid stable partners. I like going out with 2-3 people max and planning on spending the entire day in the mountains. If conditions are right, chutes and steep skiing are preferable, but sometimes a deep powder consolation prize can be nice as well. Weather and snow conditions are secondary to a good group of partners. . Best backcountry or sidecountry day of the last year? Skiing in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada with Noah Howell and Jay Beyer. It was midweek so we had it all to ourselves and it was a bluebird day with just enough new snow to be fun, but travel was still easy and the avalanche danger was low to non-existent.
What was your first backcountry trip? Aside from day trips in the Wasatch, one of my earlier trips was an attempt to ski the Grand Teton in Wyoming. We didn’t come close to making the summit, but had a good time, learned a lot, got scared and then came back for more. Best advice for new backcountry skiers? Be patient. Skiing ability is one of many factors involved with skiing in the backcountry and learning how to climb and how to assess avalanche conditions are skills that can take many years. Look at it as a long-term sport and you won’t be disappointed. Also, learn to love the uphills. Best backcountry lesson learned last year? Last year was one of the worst and most dangerous snowpacks the Wasatch Mountains has seen in decades. I learned how important it was to have partners who were willing be mellow when conditions called for it, which was most of the season. I never go skiing without my ______ Altimeter watch. If you didn’t track your vertical… it didn’t happen. ☺ Skiing the eastern fjords of Greenland. Best thing about rockered skis? Smooth turn initiation. It is like sinking into a vat of warm butter.
