What’s your ideal backcountry day? Sleeping in a yurt, cabin, or some structure out in the mountains at the base of a 2,000 + foot amphitheatre of varying lines. Upon waking we find 2 feet of fresh coldsmoke atop the most stable Northwest snowpack that allows for safe travel and turns. We have a group of fun friends and family who are hungry for getting some good lines, or at least happy to be in the beautiful mtns. Those that can shred go skiing in the morning, while those who enjoy a slower pace of life hang around the cabin making lunch and going cross country skiing, then after skiing a couple lines we come back for lunch, after which we head up for one more epic sunset shred. To finish, we come back to a warm cabin with a warm meal, drinks, stories, jokes, and dreams of the next day to come. (Repeat) . Best backcountry or sidecountry day of the last year? Gray-Stormy day at Mt. Hood mid January, with 2 snowboarder buddies ducking side country ropes and getting a secret stash of turns consecutively every run with no people around mid-week.
What was your first backcountry trip? Go with experienced, trustworthy friends or people from an avalanche safety class who will make sure it’s fun but also educational so you know what to be aware of while getting out into the goods Best advice for new backcountry skiers? ALWAYS, ALWAYS follow the protocol of eyes on your buddy, one at a time, point out dangers….etc. A small patch of untouched snow could be waiting to go. Early season last year we were hiking up inside the resort, it was all tracked out so we weren’t too worried about dangers, but my friend hitting a pocket of loaded snow got into a small slide that he was lucky to make his way out of. Just because it’s been skied, seems stable, doesn’t mean it won’t slide….. Best backcountry lesson learned last year? ClifBar goodies: bars, bloks, gotta have the right combo I never go skiing without my ______ I plan to film for Nimbus Independent and ski a bunch of pow. If there isn't a bunch of pow, I'll just ski whatever else there is to ski. Park, pipe, groomers, whatever. Ski trip you most want to do? Ski Antarctica….I hear it’s like skiing on snow crystals. Best thing about rockered skis? You can plug the tips into bumps and chop like suspension on a bike and they initiate turns in pow so much easier than regular camber
